How Can i sign up?
We are located at 512 Justison Street inside RIV Athletics. There is a Riverfront Jiu Jitsu sign to the right of the door.
You can park anywhere on the street or in the restaurant parking lot. Do not park in the lot directly across from the gym, the do tow.
Once you get inside head all the way to the back! Do your best to avoid the cross fit members. Sometimes that means walking down the middle, sometimes we have to walk along the right wall.
WHERE EXACTLY ARE YOU LOCATED?
Absolutely! We have a large group of women from white belt to black belt who train regularly from age 12 to 40+. You will find women on the mat in every class.
We offer a safe and welcoming training environment for members of all genders and sizes. If you prefer to only train with women, we are happy to accommodate that.
Keep an eye out for our womens only program coming soon!!
Do women do jiu jitsu?
As a beginner you will start rolling once you have taken enough classes and can safely practice the moves you have learned against resistance. You will start rolling with upper belts only so they can help you with the moves and keep both of you safe! We do not have a required amount of classes or length of time that determines when you can roll.
If you come to us with some jiu jitsu experience, you may start rolling right away. Please keep in mind, you may ask upper belts to roll, but our members can refuse a roll at any time without explanation.
When do we start rolling or sparring?
Absolutely not! We have members of all ages, ability and experience. When starting Jiu Jitsu, you can take it at your own pace. If there are exercises or drills that you can not do due to injury or disability, we will make modifications to make jiu jitsu work for you. You are in control of your body and have the option to do any certain drill or spar at the end of class. New students will always be paired with more experienced students because they are more controlled with their movements and can help break down the techniques as you work through them.
I AM WORRIED ABOUT GETTING INJURED. DO I HAVE TO SPAR?
You do not need to be "in shape", have great cardio or flexibility to begin training. The best way to get in shape for jiu jitsu, is to practice jiu jitsu! While you can do additional training to benefit your jiu jitsu, the best way to get in shape is to just start. As your time in Jiu jitsu progresses, you will build muscle, increase your endurance, and improve your flexibility all through drilling, sparring and conditioning in class. We have multiple members who started to see health benefits after their first month including weight loss, decrease in medication and improvement in their mental health.
What Should I wear to my first class?
When you arrive to the gym, walk all the way to the back. Leave your bag in the designated area and look for a coach. When it is time for class, take your shoes off and clean your feet in the foot cleaning station, dry your feet and get on the mat. Every jiu jitsu class follows the same structure. First we line up against the wall by rank (white belts will be at the end of the line to the right). Follow the upper belts as you go through a jiu jitsu related warm up. This will be followed by learning a technique and drilling. Class will end with sparring, however, new students do not spar and will watch until they have learned enough to be a safe partner.
